Affordable biobased houses Now & Future The project will be totally self-sufficient, using a smart off-grid system that could be installed in places where traditional utility companies would not find it economically feasible to operate. Future development of the project will depend on the development of technology, materials and reuse of materials, which will be goal of 100 %. Not only is this project contributing to the site by having no impact on the environment in that it is CO2 positive, but also by introducing self-supporting and additional biodiversity to the environment and the natural surroundings. The approach behind this proposal is a holistic one. The houses are biobased and produced prefabricated. Biobased, environmentally friendly and CO2-neutral materials were chosen for durability, flexibility, local availability, and recyclability. The interior surface of each module was made of birch plywood or Eco board, whereas Platowood material for the external cladding and window frames was chosen based on its minimal environmental impact: throughout its entire life, from production, through its use, until the end of its life. This material is sustainably sourced with FSC® certification. The recyclability, flexibility, and functionality of these (modular) products was essential, both from an economic and environmental point of view. The prefabricated system that connects them is very simple and logical. All construction elements are delivered by electric trucks from the factory to the construction site, where they are then pieced together. The aim of this project is to create a net-zero, off-grid retreat that will been enhanced by smart technology. A smart system will be used in order to achieve a better balance between nature and people. The project illustrates a way of monitoring, managing and controlling off-grid systems remotely. It shows that retreats can be more accountable for their ecological footprint, partly through application of smart technology. Another design influence was the human inclination towards living with nature. This is reflected in added value to the natural habitat and lack of harm to nature. For instance, planting local trees and bushes that enhance biodiversity, while reusing rainwater, sunlight, and wind as energy resources makes this a sustainable, independent form of traditional living. What’s more, nature being an integral part of this project helps lower stress levels.
