"LOOP“ – Arch Walk Mall Renovation The Arch Walk Mall is owned by the world-leading pulp and paper company, APP, and is located in the bustling commercial area of Shanghai's Maotai Road and Loushanguan Road, with a total area of 80,000 square meters above and below ground. This renovation project focuses on the above-ground retail area of 30,000 square meters, consisting of a central plaza and four courtyards to the east, west, south, and north. The main goal of this renovation is to improve the circulation, upgrade facilities, enhance the facade and landscape, improve the tenant mix, and create an open, dynamic, and vibrant urban park for the community residents while preserving the original space as much as possible. The renovation concept is “LOOP” , in response to the APP’s sustainable forestry-pulp-paper integration development philosophy, using materials and color attributes symbolizing the four directions of Chinese Feng Shui (wood for the east, fire for the south, metal for the west, and water for the north), forming four themes to create a space story for consumers to experience a 24-hour loop from morning till night. The central performance plaza is the heart of the entire project space and the convergence center for the flow of people. It was a sunken plaza before. In this the new scheme it is refilled to connect much more easily with the 1F store , which allows it to accommodate more activity and event. In terms of circulation, the façade of the central building is renovated to a red metal cladded piece to form a strong visual focus point. Canopy are added around it to make a loop , connecting all the various themed courtyards. The central courtyard integrates sound, light, and electronic entertainment performances, and markets. The giant LED glass “tube”is extended to the floor to connect with consumer closely. The center ground is changed to LED glass flooring, which is vertically connected to the commercial area below. The themes of the four courtyards are planned according to different consumption periods, including the green East Corridor, lively South courtyard, romantic West Garden, and peaceful North Alley, to meet the consumption needs of different crowds at different times, such as having coffee in the East Corridor in the morning, lunch in the South Garden at noon, getting tipsy in the West Garden in the evening, and enjoying drinks in the North Alley at night. The central plaza caters to family, children, and office workers for leisure and social gatherings at different times. The inspiration for the gently curved facade with large sections comes from “paper “, which is made of etched metal plates. The original high greenery landscape of Maotai Road opens up towards the street, and the greenery forms individual outdoor seating areas, enlivening the atmosphere of the neighborhood. By combining sustainability “loop “ with space, and retail time experience “loop “ , the commercial complex will form a lively and vibrant core for its neighborhood , injecting new vitality into the city's renewal.
