Immersed in greenery, this finely crafted neighbourhood block responds to local mid-century and Victorian typology while offering a unique vision to the Sydney terrace. Located in the heritage-listed suburb of Ashbury NSW Australia, and in a housing market experiencing a high demand for single dwelling homes, Ashbury Terraces represents the missing middle in housing diversity. Sitting between high-density apartment living and low-density suburban sprawl – this project provides the individuality of a single home and the amenity of an apartment. The terrace typology is used as a means to connect to the surrounding suburb, giving the development a unique identity, and makes for refined, beautifully crafted homes. The design focuses on maximising space and solar access, natural ventilation, and fostering a connection to gardens, with the verticality of the terrace adding a layer of joy and delight through voids, lightwells and stairs top lit from above. The brick materiality of the proposal draws from the neighbouring context and historical use of the site as a brick quarry. Utilising this materiality with scale and form, the proposal is responsive to the existing character of the area. The single and double-storey forms that mark the street have opposing skillion roofs, repeated along the length of Milton Street, a direct interpretation of the roofscape expression of the neighbouring bungalows. Landscape is a focal point of the design, with an emphasis on ‘the garden’ – it’s used to elevate the sense of place and support the wellbeing of residents, neighbours and the casual passer-by. A private oasis at the heart of the project includes a pool built into the landscape, dining spaces with barbeque facilities, quiet areas to retreat and reflect, and a fully equipped gym. This communal space offers significant amenity to residents who will each occupy generous 2–4-bedroom residences. Each terrace features multi-level outdoor entertaining areas and flourishing gardens fostering a seamless connection between the indoors and out. The journey is lifted by this landscape setting, arriving via the communal courtyard and through a garden to your front door, making the arrival home a thing of joy.
