Bamboo Pavilion, World Flora Exposition

As one of the theme pavilions in the World Flora Exposition of Taiwan, Bamboo pavilion arises awareness about buildings carbon footprint using traditional and local materials and techniques through a modern design, creating something more than a space, an experience. Based on the shape of the Central Mountain Range and the bamboo seed, the pavilion signifies the sustainable and eternal growth. Bamboo is the main structural element. It is also used as filter to the exterior with a very local technique, bamboo weaving, all together, with traditional masonry techniques, creating a sustainable low-carbon green building which resembles the oriental aesthetics and authenticity. In shape, the pavilion resembles the Central Mountain Range, in experience it evokes a walk through a bamboo forest. The forest is present in all of its stages, from the seed, to the plant, to the forest. A space where the spirit of the World Flora Expo comes to live. Space, nature and people unite as one creating an experience, an invitation to feel and listen nature. Each section represents a cluster of bamboo, with a changing perception within the pavilion. In a lower level the trunks, then the cluster of branches and at its highest part, the leaves, which let the sky inside the space, were a dialogue between architecture and the natural elements id born. The structure is made out of bamboo sections as well as the cross sections, making each one of them structurally independent, and the weaving gives cohesion and enables the pavilion to structurally work as one. Bamboo weaving: has a double function. On one hand, gives shadow to the interior and act as a filter, on the other hand it gives structural cohesion. Creating a pavilion were the structure is the space.
