Cliff House

Bragança Paulista

Situated on the edge of a dramatic landscape, Cliff House is an architectural statement that seems to defy gravity while embracing nature. Designed by Fernanda Marques, this 1,397 m² residence in São Paulo seamlessly integrates with its surroundings, unfolding in a series of cantilevers that hover above the lush vegetation. Inspired by the organic forms of natural plateaus, the house emerges from the terrain, dissolving the boundaries between architecture and nature. Sustainability was a guiding principle from the start. The house was carefully implanted to respect the natural topography, avoiding major earthworks and preserving the existing vegetation. Its scale and orientation were designed to integrate smoothly into the landscape. Passive strategies—such as cross ventilation, generous overhangs, and terraces—help regulate sunlight exposure and minimize heat gain, significantly reducing the need for air conditioning and promoting natural thermal comfort. Rainwater harvesting, LED lighting, and thoughtful material choices further contribute to the home’s energy efficiency and reduced environmental footprint. Designed for a young couple and their children, the residence unfolds along the natural contours of the land, with interconnected levels that follow its gentle slopes. Expansive floor-to-ceiling glass panels frame sweeping views and blur the distinction between indoor and outdoor spaces, allowing natural light and ventilation to permeate every corner of the home. Materiality plays a crucial role in reinforcing this dialogue with nature, creating a structure that feels both rooted and ethereal. Light-colored stone clads the facades and select interior walls, offering a sophisticated yet rustic character. These stones contribute to thermal comfort by keeping interiors cool during hot days and retaining warmth on cooler nights. Warm slatted wood accentuates the ceilings and external surfaces, while brown-toned metallic elements add a subtle layer of elegance and refinement. These materials not only enhance the aesthetic cohesion of the house but also support its sustainable design approach, ensuring comfort with minimal reliance on artificial climate control. A central circulation axis organizes the residence, seamlessly connecting its social, private, and leisure areas while maintaining a sense of openness. Upon entry, visitors are greeted with a breathtaking panoramic view that extends from the living spaces to the infinity pool. The seven-bedroom residence also features a home theater, a fully equipped gym, and a wellness area, catering to the residents' dynamic and wellness-focused lifestyle while ensuring privacy from the common areas, with spaces distributed across the upper and lower floors. "This house was conceived as an experience, where living is an immersion in nature. The architecture is there to enhance, not compete with, the surroundings. It’s a retreat where the beauty of the landscape is always present, and every space invites touch, contemplation, and interaction," says Fernanda Marques.
