Courtyard35 - Hutong Cloudscape

Beijing

WAY Studio designed the renovation of an old and secluded courtyard in the centre of Beijing and transformed it into an urban attraction, incorporating a micro-mixed-use complex. In this project, WAY Studio contemplates the relationship between old and new, between outside and inside, positive and negative space, creating a cloudscape insertion that emphasize the spatial experience of the void, and adding to the urban fabric of Beijing. **Something Old, Something New: Redefining Tradition in Beijing’s Courtyard 35** This project, located in central Beijing near the historic imperial palace, explores the interplay between tradition and innovation. It reimagines a once-isolated courtyard, blending old and new elements to create a dynamic public space. The design preserves the essence of traditional Chinese Siheyuan (courtyard) architecture while introducing modern functionalities, transforming the area into a vibrant urban hub. The courtyard, previously fragmented by renovations and road expansions, lacked unity. To revitalize it, the focus shifted to negative space, creating a natural gathering area. The addition of a cloudscape bridge reshaped the spatial order, redefining how traditional courtyards can be repurposed. This bridge, an installation piece, serves as a statement between old and new, framing moments of nature within the urban landscape. Its organic curves evoke a connection to nature, offering visitors a unique perspective of the courtyard and its ancient trees. The renovation retained the original building, integrating modern functions like a coffee shop, exhibition space, restaurant bar, and cultural exchange studio. This blend of old and new fosters social interaction and cultural activities, ensuring the space remains relevant to contemporary needs. The cloud-bridge also creates "gray spaces," blurring the boundaries between indoors and outdoors, and redefining the relationship between architecture, nature, and users. The design honors Chinese aesthetics, drawing inspiration from Li Bai’s poem *Inquiries in the Mountains*, which speaks of a world apart from the human realm. By balancing modern functionality with abstract, impressionistic elements, the project invites visitors to reimagine traditional Chinese spaces. Courtyard 35 exemplifies how cultural heritage can be preserved while adapting to modern urban life, creating a space that is both functional and deeply rooted in tradition.
