Across Asian culture and history, the crane symbolizes longevity, immortality, and spiritual transcendence. In Xianning, a suburban area around Wuhan, China, there is a wetland memorial park, where cranes and various species live in harmony in natural reserve. Wetland ecology enhances a cemetery landscape where people can eventually rest in peace. Our project, the 540m2 Crane Pavilion is not only a habitat built for crane, but also a cultural memorial space between the burial site and natural reserve.Death and its rituals in Chinese culture have historically been marked by deep sorrow and fear, our design orients towards respect, emotion and as metaphoric way returning anthropological life origins, by alleviating fear and sadness in favor of graceful acceptance of death.
