DB Schenker Upcycling Hub

Singapore

From Waste to Space Borne from the ambition to raise awareness of circularity within the logistics and supply industry, the Upcycling Hub originated as an employee lunchroom in 2018 and grew into a 5,000 sqft interior space. It is the first in Singapore to employ additive manufacturing (3D Printing) and digital design to transform over 30,000 discarded plastic bottles, cardboard boxes, foam packaging, and wood pallets into elegant, functional design pieces. The Hub embodies an entirely new paradigm for repurposing waste materials into beautiful, practical spaces. Using state-of-the-art 3D printing and computer numerical control cutting processes, waste materials are resurrected as unique pieces of furniture that underscore the enormous potential of sustainable design. The Hub’s layout is thoughtfully organized into three distinct areas. The red wall communicates the intricate manufacturing processes through detailed axonometric drawings. Adjacent, the white band by the window features a long table, illuminating the space with natural light and 3D printed biopolymer pendant lights. The central area pulses with social interaction beneath chandeliers crafted from recycled PETG. These innovative PET chandeliers demonstrate the versatility of 3D printing in architecture, transforming plastic waste into complex, visually compelling fixtures that both define and decorate the space. The 4m dome-like Gathering Chandelier and the four identical Dining Chandeliers demonstrate the potential of 3D printing to advance sustainable design at both small and large scales What sets the Upcycling Hub apart is its hands-on approach, involving users in every step of the design process. This user-centric approach nurtures a sense of ownership and appreciation for the upcycled materials among employees, demonstrating the potential of 3D printing to empower individuals to contribute to sustainable design. The Upcycling Hub challenges conventional perceptions of waste and serves as an inspirational tool for educating users and future designers. By transforming waste, which has long been seen as a societal burden, into a resource for creating beautiful design objects, the Hub encapsulates a forward-thinking vision of sustainability. This project is more than a mere architectural space—it’s a testament to the power of technology and commitment to sustainability. DB Schenker proudly presents this space as a pioneering example of the circular economy, transforming waste into luxury, setting a precedent for future sustainable endeavors, and illustrating how companies and individuals alike can contribute to a more sustainable future.
