A New Life for a Historic Site The Dom Turka in Augustów, a building with a tragic history, once served as the headquarters of the Soviet NKVD and later the Polish Security Office. Today, it is being transformed into the Museum of the Augustów Roundup, commemorating one of Poland's darkest chapters. The museum adaptation respects its historical value while creating an engaging space that tells the victims' stories. The original structure is preserved with subtle modifications to improve functionality. Authentic elements, such as remnants of prison cells, evoke the past, supported by thorough archaeological research. A key part of the project is the new museum section, designed to blend with the landscape. Its vertical façade, shaped by light and shadow, references the Augustów Primeval Forest, a silent witness to the tragedy. Modern materials integrate with the surroundings, fostering reflection and remembrance. Beyond exhibitions, the museum serves as an educational center. Interactive displays, survivor testimonies, and archival materials provide an immersive experience, particularly for younger generations. Accessibility is a priority, with ramps, elevators, and clear signage ensuring a welcoming space for all. Exhibits accommodate the visually impaired, and sign language support, along with tailored materials for individuals on the autism spectrum, ensures inclusivity. The transformation of Dom Turka is more than preservation—it is a commitment to historical truth and national identity. No longer just a symbol of suffering, it becomes a place where history is retold for future generations. The memorial concept reflects the forest’s edge as both a place of martyrdom and shelter. Greenery grows among sculptural steel trees, reinforcing the connection to nature and history. Visitors can honor victims personally by adding flowers or ribbons next to names of loved ones, creating a lasting tribute to the past.
