Doruk Nilüfer Hospital

Bursa

Located in Bursa/Türkiye, this ambitious project spans an impressive 55,000 square meters, reimagining the landscape of healthcare facilities. It features a comprehensive scope, including 13 operating rooms, 147 meticulously crafted patient rooms, and an array of specialized polyclinic areas. Additionally, the project boasts a visually striking lobby/cafeteria, hydrotherapy pool units, a dedicated emergency department, and spacious conference halls. Central to the project's ethos is the fluid-formed lobby, designed to seamlessly integrate between the floor, ceiling, columns, and even the information desk, along with concealed lighting design, offering a trustworthy space for patients, visitors, and staff. Despite the inherent challenges of employing parametric design language, the employer is also willing and insistent on collaborating with designers to create a more robust design language. The design prioritizes parametric integrity alongside functionality, as fluid surfaces and abundant natural light create an inviting atmosphere conducive to healing and well-being. The hydrotherapy pool areas, which hold additional significance due to the rich thermal and mineral resources of Uludağ mountain located in Bursa—referred to as the 'Mountain of the Gods' in mythological records for its ancient volcanic origins—also follow the same signature parametric design route, providing users with a comforting and familiar environment. The project aims to elevate the human experience within healthcare environments. By prioritizing simplicity and functionality, while also incorporating elements of beauty and comfort, the design aims to enhance the overall well-being of patients and staff alike. Consideration has been given to sustainability primarily through the selection of materials and products. Precast concrete, commonly used in prominent areas like the lobby, offers significant advantages in sustainable construction. With its locally sourced natural and recycled components, low water-to-cement ratio, excellent insulation and thermal properties, energy efficiency, durability, and recyclability, it minimizes carbon and water footprints while providing optimal living and working conditions. The marmoleum flooring used throughout the project boasts features such as preventing bacterial growth, being allergy-approved, phthalate-free, low-emission, and acoustic, making it ideal for both green architecture and environments with stringent hygiene standards such as hospitals. Moreover, energy-efficient LED lighting is utilized throughout the project, further contributing to sustainability efforts. Additionally, all products used in wet areas are rated A+, and surface covering materials such as MDF are recyclable and locally produced in Türkiye, aiming to minimize carbon footprint. This project represents a significant step forward in healthcare architecture for Bursa, showcasing the transformative power of design to positively impact the lives of those who experience it. With its thoughtful approach to space planning, attention to detail, and commitment to creating environments that promote healing and well-being, the project sets a new standard for healthcare facilities in Bursa and subsequently throughout Türkiye.
