DSU Applied Research Laboratory

The Dakota State University Applied Research Lab represents a bold new chapter in the evolution of South Dakota’s educational and economic landscape. As DSU’s first satellite campus beyond Madison, the facility anchors the state’s initiative to transform Sioux Falls into a national center for cyber intelligence. The architecture is born from identity. Inspired by DSU’s hexagonal logo, the building’s parti informs its geometry, planning, and massing—creating a unified visual and conceptual language that ties directly to the university’s legacy. The result is a luminous, sculptural form that seems to float above the prairie, shifting in appearance as one moves through the site. This architectural expression is both iconic and approachable—an emblem of progress designed to inspire curiosity and pride.

Set within a restored prairie landscape, the project emphasizes harmony between the built environment and the natural world. The site, once farmland, is revived with native vegetation, and permeable surfaces. Parking is clustered discreetly, allowing the landscape to breathe and reclaim its presence.

Inside, the building blends high-security functionality with wellness-driven design. Natural light floods the interiors through rhythmically placed windows, offering views of the surrounding landscape while maintaining visual privacy. Workspaces are organized to support mental clarity and collaboration, with wood finishes and soft materials creating a warm, grounded atmosphere. The future campus' courtyards, gardens, and terraces offer spaces for pause, reflection, and connection with nature—essential in a facility designed for around-the-clock operations.
