FUGRO, derived from the Dutch words for Foundation Technology & Soil Mechanics, is a global leader in geotechnical, geophysical, and hydrographic data acquisition and interpretation. With over 25 years of presence in India, Fugro Survey (India) Pvt. Ltd. has been instrumental in delivering insights into the Earth's surface and subsurface conditions. Committed to innovation, sustainability, and excellence, the company’s mission is to create a safer and more livable world. The existing FUGRO office, situated in an industrial zone, though functional, no longer supports the company's growing spatial demands, employee well-being, or environmental ambitions. Recognizing these limitations, the company has embarked on redeveloping its current site to create a modern, sustainable, and expressive headquarters—one that not only meets functional needs but also reflects the values and identity of the company. Inspired by FUGRO’s geological expertise, the architectural concept draws from the Earth’s stratified geosphere, translating these layers into staggered building forms. The resulting composition of terraced floors not only mirrors the company’s scientific foundation but also generates dynamic spatial volumes, facilitating light, ventilation, and programmatic flexibility. A double-height glazed entrance lobby acts as both threshold and connector, revealing the internal atrium from the public street till the end of the podium. The building steps back along its northern edge, forming terraces that harness soft northern and eastern light, while minimized southern openings reduce heat gain enhancing occupant comfort and overall energy efficiency. The natural topography of the site is used strategically to create ventilated lower ground levels, minimizing the dependence on artificial systems. Biophilic principles are central to the design. The integration of internal and outdoor landscape and generous daylight creates a work environment that supports well-being, collaboration, and community. Recreational and activity-based spaces with an open staircase connecting floors in atrium are interwoven into the building program to compensate for the lack of surrounding amenities and to cultivate a vibrant internal ecosystem for employees. Sustainability is a foundational driver of the project. The headquarters is being developed with the intent of achieving LEED certification, incorporating a number of advanced environmental strategies. Solar panels on the roof aim to achieve energy neutrality. The design also provides scope for future scalability, with provisions for vertical extensions. Interior circulation axes are day lit through skylights and lined with natural earthy materials creating warm, engaging spaces that encourage interaction and reflection. The new FUGRO India Headquarters is more than a building, it is a spatial translation of the company’s ethos. It merges geology and architecture, environmental strategy and structural logic, human well-being and organizational identity into a cohesive, high-performing and forward-looking workplace. It is designed not only to reflect FUGRO’s mission today but to evolve with its growth and vision for a more sustainable tomorrow.
