Ireland House Tokyo

Ireland · Tokyo

Ireland House, the result of an international open competition launched by the Irish government in 2019, is a new landmark embassy in Tokyo that reflects over 60 years of diplomatic ties between Ireland and Japan. Designed to raise Ireland’s profile and serve as a showcase for its culture, creativity, and innovation, the building embodies the values of openness, craft, and enduring international friendship. Located adjacent to Yotsuya Station—one of Tokyo’s major transport hubs—and facing a rare landscaped park, the site offers a unique opportunity to engage with both the intensity of the urban fabric and the serenity of nature. The design takes inspiration from the Irish Tower House (caisleán) and the Japanese machiya, combining their spatial logics and symbolic forms. A robust concrete plinth grounds the building, cradling a series of glazed timber lanterns that house the key public functions. Together, they interlock like a piece of Japanese joinery, forming a crafted, coherent whole that balances permanence with lightness. All public functions are located on the lower levels for direct access from the street. A generous double-height entrance hall leads to a flexible event space below, while a public library and exhibition space dedicated to Lafcadio Hearn (Yakumo Koizumi) sits adjacent. These are all arranged around a central glazed courtyard that draws in daylight and nature, creating a spatial sequence rich in openness and visual connection. The embassy and consulate occupy the first floor; state agencies IDA Ireland, Enterprise Ireland, and Bord Bia are located on the second. The third floor houses official ambassadorial accommodation, with formal representational rooms placed at the top of the building. A full interior fit-out includes bespoke joinery, furniture, and art from both Irish and Japanese makers, expressing a shared commitment to craft and cultural exchange. The structural design addresses the site’s stepped height restrictions and asymmetry through a series of vertically continuous reinforced concrete stability walls, aligned to balance the building’s centre of mass. A central concrete lantern frame provides additional lateral and seismic stability. At ground level, two storey-height steel trusses allow for a column-free event space while maintaining structural integrity at the rear of the building, where continuity is limited. Sustainability was a core design principle from the outset. Rainwater harvesting, photovoltaic panels, and solar thermal systems are integrated into the design. The building has achieved an ‘S’ rating—the highest possible—under Japan’s CASBEE environmental performance certification. Ireland House is a tactile, dignified, and atmospheric building that weaves together Irish and Japanese cultural traditions through architecture, materiality, and landscape. It stands as a symbol of shared values and future collaboration, and as a welcoming space for diplomacy, culture, and community in the heart of Tokyo.
