Karuizawa Commongrounds Bookstore

Karuizawa, Nagano

Karuizawa Commongrounds lies in one of Japan’s oldest resort towns, nestled between the mountains of Nagano and at the foot of Mount Asama. Operated by Culture Convenience Club Co. and designed as a community hub for Karuizawa residents, it comprises a main bookstore surrounded by five small buildings hosting local businesses, including a delicatessen, wine store, soba restaurant, and a pre-school. The location, a historically popular summer retreat for the Imperial family, surrounds the complex with views of lush woodland and majestic distant peaks. In Japan, where buildings depreciate over time, Karuizawa Commongrounds illustrates a viable, more sustainable, and environmentally conscious alternative to the nation’s enduring culture of razing and rebuilding properties. The bookstore is the heart of the complex. Inspired by the area’s past and the needs of its community, it is a unique renovation of what was once a two-story seminar house for Tokyo’s Aoyama Gakuin University. An extension wraps around the lower half of the original rectangular building. Like an architectural corset, its steel beams pairing with original old wooden ones to support its framework and ensure longevity, it’s gently undulating roof hugging the structure like a twirling skirt. The roof’s flowing arches, echoed by its soft, inward-curving eaves evoke the highland terrain of the location as they extend beyond the extension’s glass walls to shelter a surrounding terrace. From sunrise to sunset, the entire Karuizawa Commongrounds bookstore embraces natural light. To the south, the terrace doubles as a long bench, where a continuous wooden counter allows visitors to sit, dangle their legs over the edge and look out on a peaceful mini meadow. The north enjoys views of Mount Asama beyond a thriving vegetable garden. To the west, stepped wooden decks lead up to the bookstore entrance and offer spaces that bask in the afternoon sun ahead of a dense copse of woodland. By nightfall, the structure transforms. Its glass walls and second-floor windows emit the warm welcoming glow of its interiors, like a lantern lighting the way in a forest. Inside, simple plywood furnishings match a ceiling of exposed wooden beams that radiate out from the seminar house’s rectangular framework in the center. A modest concrete floor meets the sweeping curves of the extension’s tall windows, which draw the eye to and maximize views of nature. Shelves filled with books wrap around the original structure, the middle of which is left open. The Karuizawa Commongrounds bookstore offers more than just reading material. Shozo Cafe occupies a section of what was the seminar house, its extended side furnished with tables and chairs that bathe in the hazy afternoon light and overlook the building’s decks and woodland vista. In a north-facing corner, a children’s nook with circular rugs and soft bean bags takes advantage of the full day’s light. The radical but respectful design illustrates how imaginative renovation can add value to old structures in multiple ways — economically, aesthetically and culturally.
