Kinshasa Ndjili Airport

Kinshasa

Existing airport, which was designated as a rescue airport for space shuttle flights by NASA and has one of the longest runways in the world with a length of 4700 meters, already hosts nearly fifteen international airline companies, is an important stopover point for many cargo companies, and provides flights to more than 50 international and domestic destinations. In 2015, new infrastructures such as a 35-meter tower, fire station and technical facilities into service to respond the increase in passenger traffic. The new terminal structure to accommodate projected 8 million people per year capacity will be developed without interfering with the existing Terminal that is in a suitable location for expansion. Moreover, with the advantage of the airport being in an area that has the potential to grow in the future, the contemporary modular design is being designed to gradually meet future needs. The capacity of the areas planned within the scope of the Main Terminal (Domestic & International) with a total of approximately 100,000 M2, located on the Departures (+9), Arrivals (0 and +4), Technical areas (-5) floors, has been planned with flexibility to increase the number of bridges. The integrated but separable structure of the independent segments allows the building to be used partially when it is not required, creating an economical infrastructure - in terms of air conditioning and service. Contrasting erstwhile airports, which are generally experienced as a stressful and troublesome waiting area experienced by passengers during air travels, the design gains a unique functionality with bright, spacious areas, transitions, and checkpoints, along with the ease provided by the inter-space organization and circulation scheme, with the aim of providing a more simplified service. Carrying a symbolic value in the sense of trust and pride of the society, the terminal project aims a strong access/communication model in social interaction. The project will be constructed in two phases.
