Luna

Burleigh Heads, Gold Coast

Thoughtfully composed for its iconic beachside setting on Burleigh Headland, Luna forges a new architectural standard for luxury multi residential living on the Gold Coast. Engaged to develop the vision from initial concept design through to completion, this is our second ambitious apartment project delivered in partnership with local developer Forme. Emerging from idyllic coastal surroundings, our design takes an empathetically fluid form, visibly distinct from its rectilinear neighbours. Luna is characterised by an artful, non-standard approach to utilitarian materials, particularly glass and concrete. Each level is wrapped in a seemingly continuous, curvilinear glass facade, emulating the movement of light through waves. Strategically placed panels of precision-made fluted glass successfully provide internal privacy with no need for additional screening or deep recesses on the facade. This use of floor-to-ceiling fluted glazing is a first in high rise residential buildings on the Gold Coast. Built on a small site with a very narrow frontage, we sought strategies to expand liveable space; an exploration which yielded unique spatial opportunities. Organically curved floor plates extend beyond the building footprint, simultaneously providing spacious balconies above and ample sun shading below. Taking a cue from eroded coastal landforms, each slab is honed from the top to create a fine edge, appearing impossibly slim - a complex technical detail resolved through expert craftsmanship. Made to withstand the elements, its hardwearing concrete shell achieves a weightless appearance through bespoke detail. The building contributes to a greener streetscape through lower levels lush with tropical planting, inspired by native rainforests of the nearby National Park. This spills outward through a robust, yet visually unobtrusive screen of delicate concrete fins. All planters featured on the ground floor and roof terrace are made of not only curved, but fluted concrete, echoing the rhythmic ripple of glass surfaces above. Upon entry, visitors pass through an inviting, landscaped communal ground plane, complete with gym and pool, into a more insular lobby within. This sequence is intentionally choreographed to emphasise a feeling of expanse, as lift doors open directly into the boundless views on each apartment floor. Comprising seven full-floor apartments topped by a dual-level penthouse, this bijou apartment building encourages an immersive experience of its oceanic locale. A nuanced textural palette of natural stone and timber exudes relaxed beachside sophistication, in an interior solution curated by Mim Design. Floorplans are carefully oriented toward capturing uninterrupted views, with main volumes pulled back from the glazed perimeter, and master bedrooms positioned toward the southwest. Kitchen and entertaining spaces extend into balconies which sprawl beyond the building edge, where residents can enjoy a unique vantage point above the ocean.
