Macquarie Point Multipurpose Stadium will be unlike any other venue in Australia. Its situation on a sensitive waterfront site in historic Hobart presents a unique set of challenges as well as opportunities. Accordingly, the design response is informed by local cultural and industrial heritage, as well as a commitment to preserving significant views over and around the stadium. The defining element is the expansive roof shell spanning 190 metres across the field that will be the largest fixed roof over a natural grass oval anywhere in the world. An exemplary structural design, the roof will be composed of ETFE and framed with steel and timber. The building form is wrapped with a folded screen to represent a woven element; a veil composed of many threads. Under the guidance of the local Aboriginal community, the design references the continuing cultural practice of weaving. A heritage-listed Goods Shed is proposed to be restored and grafted to the Stadium. Integration of the two buildings will revitalise the Shed and establish a new place for hospitality and events that is rich with the character of the past. The project is designed by COX Architecture with Cumulus Studio for the Macquarie Point Development Corporation.
