Manna

Originally built in the 1920s, the Manna Sanatorium hosted tuberculosis patients who hoped to heal from the benefits of living within the idyllic arcadic woods, until the introduction of penicillin forced the abandonment of Manna. To revive the property required redefining the same concepts of hospitality & wellness that served its first life cycle. The secluded unspoilt location combined with the emblematic architecture of a lost era inspired us to translate this vision into an optimistic, contemporary and respectful continuity of history, to breathe new life into the walls and bridge a century-long gap without sacrificing its original identity, by sticking to its roots and showcasing the monumental heritage of the building with a series of surgical interventions. The original design of the building predicted a symmetrical plan and facade, but was never completed. The hotel’s functionality was extended to the footprint of an auxiliary structure by adding a glass corridor, and the attic that hosts an extra level of rooms. Upon arrival, guests are greeted in the welcome area, a cosy space where local treats by the fireplace are on offer. The Bar makes a clear nod to the healing past of the property thanks to its apothecary complex joinery style. On the lower level the wellness amenities explore further the concept of being grounded. Inside each of the 32 rooms, a space timber grid is reflected on the floor patterns of terrazzo and marble, to organise sub-areas of sleep, bathing, dressing etc. This grid feature is a heritage from signature original elements. Key to the revival of Manna is the subtle reinvention of its material palette. Extra care was given in maintaining, continuing and repurposing material stock sourced from nearby: flat or textured natural renders, terrazzo floors, stone elements, chestnut panels and metal windows complement the building envelope.
