Mosque

KSA

Our Collaborative design entry by Islam Mosleh El Mashtooly Galal Abada Mouaz Abouzaid for The International Competition of Grand Mosque of Sheikh Abdulatif Al Fozan is a blend of past and future design visions while incorporating various unique elements. Our aim was to create a design that is more than just a mosque; a space that can act as a gathering community open space for people to come together to pray, to socialize, to relax and to find peace by enjoying the natural beauty around them. The Mosque is elevated connecting the park with the sea so it provides a free flow of people through the spaces. The open areas below the mosque will provide an opportunity for the gathering of people, a place for families, friends and the community to come together and relax. Our mosque design has a functional minaret with the headquarters of Abdullatif Al Fozan Award for Mosque (AFAMA) located at the upper level. The minaret has been designed to act as a lighthouse for the entire world, selecting the best mosque from across the globe. The design of the mosque is based on the shape of the circle; the circular roof emphasizes this shape. The roof has been perforated to allow light to filter into the mosque while also creating interesting patterns that are visible from both inside and outside. The circle also plays a significant role in the mosque’s design as it creates a sense of unity and equality. The circular shape of the mosque acts as a full circle blending with the shape and geometry of the landscape creating an overall floating effect. The use of water has been incorporated into the design, adding a soothing tranquil effect that not only compliments the coastal location but also helps bring the people closer to nature. The mosque has been designed to bring together modern design with the traditional elements of Islamic architecture. The overall goal was to create an inspiring space that would attract people of all cultures, backgrounds and religions. The spatial design of the mosque has also been developed in a way that reflects the principles of Islamic architecture. The mosque has been designed to be a welcoming space, with space that is both functional and inviting. The design of the mosque has also been developed with sustainability in mind. The mosque has been designed to take advantage of natural light and ventilation, reducing the need for artificial lighting and air conditioning. The use of photovoltaic systems is also planned to satisfy most energy requirements, and extensive water recycling strategies. At the heart of the design is the prayer space, which is located beneath a large perforated roof. The use of a curved roof creates a sense of fluidity and movement, while the vertical openings allow for natural ventilation and create a dappled light effect within the space.
