Neuländer Quarrée

Hamburg

A conceptual design for a mixed use development in Hamburg, Germany. Situated in the transforming area of the Harburg inland port, the design aims to introduce a new cultural identity to this historic area. The conceptual thinking aimed to formulate a rational design in order to achieve the optimal use of space while creating affordable, high quality living and working spaces. Key design elements included angled brick facades & balconies to ensure optimal sunlight entering the apartments and creating privacy for balconies facing the public walkways of the precinct. The materiality was inspired by the traditional use of brick in Hamburg but presented in a more contemporary colour and pattern, bringing a new identity to the precinct. Introducing a public viewing space, accessible to pedestrians, cyclists and people with disabilities, as an extension of the pier softens the boundary between public and private spaces. The design introduces an additional urban layer on the roof level of blocks A1, A2 & A3. The potential of connecting the roof spaces with pedestrian bridges opens up the possibilities to create an ‘urban plaza with shared recreational spaces. This aims to create a strong sense of community between the residents of the development whether it be sharing a sports game or a vegetable garden. This is a cost effective way to add value to the precinct as a whole through the optimisation of the roof spaces, while enriching the community by giving them access to all the different proposed uses. The result of sharing urban uses and facilities will result in community that is socially and ecologically sustainable.
