GENERAL DESCRIPTION PCI-SUNTEK Technology Group HQ is located in Guangzhou, China. Architects go to Chinese cultural roots – a balance of squareness and roundness extracted from oriental heritage. U-shape is an ideal form to against heats and glares from the west while ensuring ventilation and mild daylights under subtropical climate. The building meets the China 'Green Building Evaluation Standards', where strategies in fields of noise reduction, energy-saving, resource-recycling and -upcycling are applied. 68 percent of utilisable rooftop coverage is turned into greenery areas, including a sky garden, eco corridors and a hanging sunshine atrium over the 8th and 9th floor, while a 1200sqm courtyard is centred to the core. FORM Seeing the similarity between strokes in Chinese characters and 0/1 in the world of digital, architects chose to interpret contemporary image of technology industry with cultural relevance. The combination of squareness and roundness that extracted from Chinese calligraphy, therefore, becomes the composition of architectural volumes. FUNCTIONS DESIGN TO CONNECT As what embedded in the corporate culture of PCI-SUNTEK Technology Group, connectivity, porosity and integration are principles of the architectural programme. 58 percent of the holistic construction area is devoted into common spaces, where the consideration of socialising dimension coming in. OFFICE IN GREEN To improve the ‘micro-weather’ of subtropical climate like Guangzhou, architects design a 1200sqm courtyard complemented implemented by a sky garden. The sunshine atrium over the 8th and 9th floor becomes a flexible interaction point besides formal conference rooms located on office floors. MATERIALITY As adopting crystalline glass curtain walls, working areas are light-filled, and most of which are configured for flexibility and beneficial to interdisciplinary collaboration. In order to introduce more natural lights, the team devised a scheme where sunshines can be introduced into the base of building. During the day, glasses reflect daylights and allowing it to flood into the interior with translucent facades, while the process reverses at nights, as lights glowing through from the courtyard making curtain walls crystalline. IMPACTS PCI-SUNTEK Technology Group Headquarters is an architectural attempt that intends to create the new mind-set catering to modern work-live styles. This breaks the old-fashioned perception in which designing a business space for working hours. With green standards, the headquarters explores the future of built environment that working with nature rather than changing and further surpassing it. Humanistic, poetic and spiritual dimensions are completely wrapped up with technology with which the building eventually ‘grows’ and ‘communes’ with the nature.
