Petra Maslak

Petra Roasting Co. is a coffee shop based in Istanbul, Turkey. After opening up their main location they shortly became very popular and started spreading in Istanbul. They have reached out to us for the design of their new location at the Maslak Mudo Concept store at the Giz 2000 Tower for a total of 78 sqm of interior space with an additional 110 sqm of outdoor space. The proposal of the Petra coffeeshop project was shaped around optimization of function within the space provided, flexibility and adaptability of the design, staying true to Petra’s design principals while offering a unique experience. Each of their previous locations followed a key principle yet differed in ways to offer their customers a unique and different experience. They didn’t use a single conceptual/material language to connect one place to another but rather focused on raising the same sensations through their variable design choices. In a way they chose to play around with their commercial identity when compared with other major coffee shops that have a design code. Our main initiative was to break through the kiosk design idea and to create a space within space, just like a shell it embodies its functions within and offers a visual unity. The final structure is defined by itself rather than where its located. The Giz Plaza is a modern building with exposed concrete and steel. Our design follows this futuristic modernity through the use of the same materials and bold/geometric shapes. The structure is held together with 10x10 steel bars which are positioned at angles that follow the existing structure. This movement of the outline of our ‘shell’ gives dynamism to the entirety of the space. The coffee shop is comprised of three parts (the kitchen, sales counter and the bar) that are defined regarding the optimization of the space, the circulation and ventilation. The back wall serves as a structural artwork on its own with its parametric design. The edgy, bold shapes at different elevations and sizes create another dynamic movement within the ‘shell’ and become the focal point of the entire project. The new Petra is designed in a completely new, unique and exciting way, while carrying strong traces of its origin roots and commercial identity.
