Petronas Leadership Centre

Bangi

Like an oasis nestled in a heavily landscaped estate, the PETRONAS Leadership Centre in Bangi is a sight to behold. In support of new ways of working, the campus is designed for social collaboration and immersive learning experiences with innovative learning spaces. The design objective was to create a sanctuary with an experiential journey, providing a respite for participants while encouraging collaborative encounters among all employees. Though relaxed, the learning environment is designed to maintain the integrity of a corporate culture. This translated into a focus on creating a legacy beyond imitation or pastiche. At the same time, there was a drive to break away from traditional campus planning and innovate to adapt the design to the local context while celebrating the organisation's roots. The main infrastructure focus of the campus is a curved central pedestrian spine that connects all building components. Learning rooms, accommodation rooms and public spaces are interwoven closely to create spatial cohesion, and crossing pedestrian bridges provide seamless visual interaction and connectedness to all these areas. The cascading building form creates a new skyline in the existing flat greenfield site, which responds directly to the site's physical demands. The campus has been thoughtfully designed to be surrounded by a lush forest and an expansive man-made lake, providing a natural acoustic and visual barrier. Not only does this enhance the overall aesthetic of the campus but also creates a serene and tranquil environment for learners and guests. The aesthetic overall building form is grounded in the physical requirements of PLC’s learning solutions. Thoughtfully sculpted around key landscape areas which fosters face-to-face interaction, the curved central spine provides meandering visual perspectives. This approach also allows for flexible space planning – essential to the campus's operations – while encouraging the external landscape to flow seamlessly into indoor spaces, promoting a harmonious and natural environment. Incorporating an open and flexible concept, the building design blurs the boundary between internal and external spaces. Besides the functional objective of coexisting with the surrounding environment, this also encourages learners to be more psychologically open in knowledge transfer. This reinforces the notion of a democratic institution, where movement is unencumbered, and job status is not hierarchical. The spine learning street serves as a unifying element that fosters camaraderie among learners, promoting collaboration and a sense of community. Drawing inspiration from the microclimatic conditions of traditional tropical villages, the campus master plan ensured integration with the surrounding landscape, serving to reduce the ambient temperature. The curved building forms create a wind tunnel effect, promoting natural cooling. Additionally, the building skin has been designed to optimise natural ventilation while maintaining resistance to rain penetration. The building envelopes have been carefully crafted to provide shade to the façades from extreme sunlight, while still allowing natural light to enter the spaces. Additionally, the roof features large overhangs, which optimise the use of renewable energy from PV panels.
