Raipur Training Institute

The Raipur Training Institute is a unique facility commissioned by the Technoblast Mining Corporation in Chhattisgarh, India for training miners and contributing workers. Design approach started with the philosophy that places of learning are culturally presumed to be elevated as a higher extent of knowledge. A raised podium is designed with an informal seating and landscaped as an activity-generator; behaving as a pause point. The central courtyard below it, acts as a focal point to the structure, binding the spaces together. It is cross-cut to the podium in the form of an oculus, with an open-to-sky staircase; illuminating the space. Porosity is maintained throughout the structure. A semi-permeable facade with angular fins creates a sense of curiosity from the exterior and inclusivity from the interior. Unobstructed visual connectivity is achieved from every point on the bridge. Terrace gardens atop, and spillover spaces for classrooms act as buffers and a vibrant mixed-use zone. Parametrics play a crucial part in the attaining the form with the help of faceted facades and enables a free circulation of light and wind. It in turn reduces dependency on artificial sources. Slits cut through the south face along with angular sun shades perform a dual function by blocking the harsh southern heat and bringing in the western winds. The north facade is completely opened up bringing indirect light inside the habitable spaces. The monolithic form is chiseled through the east direction creating a drama of internal spaces with daylight. A shallow water body strategically placed at the west end ensures passive cooling of incoming winds which in turn allows for a stack effect at the courtyard level, ventilating the internal spaces. Partial use of green roof and glass roof helps in disseminating diminished heat flow. The institute accommodates 10 classrooms, 5 workshops, offices and a conference, cafeteria, a library, admin and loading/unloading blocks with parking. Holistically, the design strives to bring a communal sense of edification with indoor training. The overall aesthetic strives to blend with the earthy scenic language of Raipur.
