SADA is a tourist area in the forest located under the foot of Mount Tangkuban Perahu, an active volcano in West Java. The SADA area is on the border between man-made monoculture pine forest and secondary forest. From the start, SADA has carried the theme of bringing architectural buildings to the forest that follow the existing conditions and avoid intervention in nature as much as possible. The pavilion, the main area of SADA, was built on a clearing that has existed since the beginning. The purpose of this pavilion is to provide a place for people to enjoy the forest up close, but still have shelter. The pavilion is intentionally not closed off with walls and left open, providing a seamless experience for visitors to be in nature while maintaining comfort. Recycled timbers were applied to the ceilings, adding a more natural look to the building. Since the building is placed in a sloping area, we elevated the structure to get the platform to the same level. Emphasizing more connection with nature, galvanized steel gratings were installed in some areas as a platform and visitors can see the ground beneath. Therefore, from various points, people can still enjoy nature with no barriers. For the rest of the platform, we used customized polished concrete tiles. We chose this material due to its application which did not require any heavy machinery. Currently, the pavilion functions as a coffee shop but can also be opened to the wider public as a multi-purpose building, gathering space, and performance stage. This pavilion is only a small part of the SADA area, and in the future, more will be built according to the area’s needs that align with forest preservation.
