Smart Ring_Campus Planning of Jiangsu Open University

The daily routine of university students allows them to go through the routine of university life, starting from their dorm, going to the classes and social activities, and then eventually back to their dorm. This repetitive routine was made into a circle, revealing its repetitive feature. The design was influenced by this circle as we not only wanted to show the continuity but also show the interplay between these student workplaces providing efficient and integrative student life. The traditional campus is built in a widespread area that brings difficulty for students from one place to interact with students from another. Smart Ring brings in the assembly of the university building into a circle, allowing interaction between students easier and far more efficient. This campus was originally built on the road that separated the circle. As this interfered with the original theme, underneath was built in order to maintain the shape of the circle. Inner circle provides a unique student environment by creating integrative student life while the outer circle provides more space for staffs and faculty. Smart Ring is a new innovative design that brings interplay of social and study life into a whole new level. The ring-circle design is based on the aspiration to create a multifaceted framework, providing a learning culture for students to integrate education with the development of their personal aptitude, helping them to pace with society’s development. The ring building is characterized by a system of rounded forms, which create a multifaceted spatial setting that takes into account the school’s different functions: an arena for teaching and learning, a workplace to share ideas and a social meeting place for a diverse group of users. Central space brings an interplay with classrooms and school’s different activities allowing students to integrate their social activities with classroom activities.
