Strömpilen - Visionite

Strömpilen – From Industrial Legacy to Modern Workspace Strömpilen in Umeå is a striking example of how historical architecture can be transformed into a vibrant and sustainable workplace. Originally designed by architect Tor Kempe, the neoclassical building was commissioned in 1927 as one of Sweden’s last wooden grinding mills. For over six decades, it produced paper pulp from spruce timber to newspapers such as the Daily Mail. At its peak, the mill employed 450 people. When production ceased in 1991 the building stood silent until the surrounding area was converted into a shopping center in the late 1990s. The mill’s ground floor was adapted for retail, but the spacious second floor remained largely unused, until now. Our vision for the project was to bring this historically rich structure into a new era while honoring its industrial soul. The design reveals original surfaces and materials, complemented by modern interventions with a neo-industrial character. A U-shaped mezzanine runs along the long sides and one short end of the space, framing a central social hub beneath a soaring eight-meter ceiling. A striking feature is the combined staircase and bleacher structure which serves as both a circulation element and a gathering space. Beneath the mezzanine you find functional zones such as meeting rooms and other staff areas tailored to the two companies sharing the premises. Natural light pours in through the six-meter gable windows, and careful lighting design enhances the raw, honest material palette. Sustainability guided every step of the process, from reuse of original elements to energy-efficient systems, to bring new life to the building with minimal environmental impact. This project demonstrates how thoughtful design can preserve a building’s character while creating a dynamic environment for work and collaboration.
