The Bohemian Eclectic and the Coastal Modern aesthetic motifs represent a sense of innovation and style that resonated with our client and formed the basis for the design inspiration for the two buildings renovated on the Tasman Campus. The client’s request for immersive environments with unexpected moments of whimsy inspired unique typologies that are mirrored on each floor with a twist……the designs change scale and detail as the user goes from ground floor to the top floors. The driving design motif at Building One's entry is the curving Riverwalk path inspired by the nearby Guadalupe River Park. The Riverwalk pulls users into the building and connects food and social spaces. Imagined as walking through the woods, flooring materials shape paths and define programmatic areas. Ceiling-mounted wood baffles form a lyrical canopy with lighting fixtures creating a dappling effect on the floor below. Semi-enclosed “libraries” provide opportunities for extraordinary whimsy. Used for focused work and reading spaces, to social and collaborative lounges. Design inspirations included: a greenhouse, an art gallery with local artist murals, and the skyline of downtown San Jose in Lichtenstein-style, reflecting the client’s commitment to arts and culture programs and local themes. Twenty hallways connect new spaces to the existing core providing an opportunity for immersion into the client’s brand colors. The result is delightfully artistic moments through highly expressive wall coverings that also provide a way-finding device in quadrants and between floors with the change of scale/perspective, moving from a finer level of detail on the ground floor to more abstract on the higher levels. The café lounge with bold green arches and earth tones is a hub between six distinctly themed serveries. Seating areas and lounges for micro kitchens are defined by arches that mimic the rhythm and structure of iconic roof forms of Coastal California.
