After the merger of Ziekenhuis Gooi-Noord and Ziekenhuis Hilversum, it was decided to provide all acute, intensive, and clinical care at one location in a new and more compact hospital. From the beginning, the principle was that Tergooi MC welcomes everyone: patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals. Wiegerinck has developed the master plan for Tergooi MC, and subsequently designed (architecture and interior design) the new hospital, a healthcare clinic, a parking garage, an ambulance station completed in 2019, and a facility building yet to be renovated. A Guest in the Landscape The hospital's orthogonal structure dominates the northern part of the location from an urban planning perspective. The parking garage, healthcare clinic, and ambulance station stand as self-confident solitaires in the park opposite the hospital in the southern part. This is highlighted by the individually rotated position of the buildings, their different materials and forms, which make the park a clearly readable continuous whole. The hospital consists of four main volumes that are connected by a central axis. This layout results in a compact volume with a human scale and short walking routes for patients, visitors, and healthcare professionals. Many insights and perspectives between the building components provide contact and connection with the environment. The connection between the building components and the park gives the ensemble a friendly and soft character. Beauty in the Park The main volumes of the hospital are connected by building components with transparent fine-mesh glass facades and thin vertical concrete elements. The contrast in height and materialization emphasizes the main volumes as solitary buildings, keeping the scale of the ensemble manageable. The reduction to four materials (brickwork, aluminum, concrete, and glass), the pleasant proportions, and the refined facade rhythm give the building a robust yet elegant and transparent appearance. A reduced color and material palette in the interior with careful accents provide a valuable and balanced design. Upon entering, the visitor is surrounded by a calm and warm atmosphere. Zonnestraal 2.0 If you design a hospital in Hilversum, the comparison with the Zonnestraal Sanatorium suggests itself. It is a house dedicated to the healing of people with lung diseases in all aspects. Lots of light, fresh air, the connection with the peace of nature, and space for social contact are the leading themes that have been consistently implemented in the architecture to optimally support the healing process spatially. Due to medical advancements in the subsequent decades, hospitals developed into more and more technological health factories where the softer factors played a subordinate role. In recent years, a more holistic vision of the healing process has emerged, in which the seemingly softer factors are also given a decisive role. In the new Tergooi MC, the healing power of nature is also the basis for the design. It is a safe place for development and recovery where nature is visible and an integral part of the building.
