The Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness (ACDP) On the windswept edge of Stingaree Bay in Victoria, a new chapter will be written for one of the world’s most secure research environments. The Australian Centre for Disease Preparedness will welcome a high-containment laboratory wing that reimagines how architecture can serve science — not only through rigour and precision, but through light, beauty, and care for the human spirit. This is no traditional concrete bunker. Here, the conventional “box-in-a-box” typology will be turned inside-out. The containment laboratories will be placed at the perimeter, wrapped by a light filled and pressurised corridor. Daylight will reach the heart of containment. Scientists, bound to strict protocols and long hours in isolation, will look outwards — to sky, land, and sea — as they carry out world-class dangerous pathogen and exotic animal disease research activities vital to maintaining Australia’s national biosecurity. The wing will rise as a quiet reflection of Country. Its architecture will speak in layers: grounded in the earth, brushed by water, reaching for sky. A fluted façade will shimmer with the interplay of shadow and light, animating the building’s surface in dialogue with its surroundings. It will be both shelter and signal — a resilient presence along the shoreline. Within the wing, the internal layout accommodates the complexity of biocontainment whilst being structured by simple principles of orientation, wayfinding and collaboration. Spaces will be ordered by risk, but also by intuition. Circulation spines lead towards light and view. Collaboration will be fostered in luminous moments between tasks. This will be a building where science and humanity are held in equal regard — a place not only to contain the world’s most dangerous pathogens, but to inspire the minds that face them.
