The Pump House

Sydney

The PUMPHOUSE is the convergence of: geologies, water, tracks, narratives, indigenous and non-indigenous people and cultures on the site and sees the transformation of an under- utilised urban void into a rich, active mixed- use proposition where WATER plays a major role in recasting the identity of this precinct into a connected and liveable community that remembers its past. Historically, the site of a rich network of natural wetlands, sand dunes and quiet waterways where the Gadigal and Gameygal people fished, this productive waterscape was transformed into an industrial site for the ‘control of water’ by Sydney Water, of which only traces remain of the Central Workshops used for maintenance. Forgotten and un-used, the site looks forward to a time of reimagining and new possibilities as a place to find the ingredients for an enriching life. As a ‘temple to water’, the project seeks to reflect upon the site as a living system; to create a new narrative for community and ecology.
