UK Pavilion Expo 2025

Yumeshima Island, Osaka

A bold celebration of British creativity The UK Pavilion at Expo 2025 Osaka invites visitors on a journey through time, from the groundbreaking inventions of the Industrial Revolution to the cutting-edge ideas shaping the future. Designed by WOO architects and delivered by ES Global, this striking structure blends Britain’s rich heritage and innovation. The pavilion is more than just a building, it's an experience that embodies the essence of a nation defined by reinvention, resilience, and relentless imagination. More than a building, the pavilion is an immersive experience that captures the essence of a nation defined by resilience, and imagination. Positioned in a prime location overlooking the Water Plaza, the pavilion embraces its setting on the southern edge of the Expo site, making the most of its open, expansive plot. Tranquil gardens frame the structure, evoking the British landscape and extending a warm welcome to visitors. Transforming facade The powder-coated aluminium façade wraps around the pavilion in folded, perforated panels interspersed with mirrors. By day, the panels shift with the light, by night, the lighting design animates the surface to reveal a Union Jack in motion, with a ripple effect reminiscent of fluttering fabric. Using parametric design, the pavilion’s layered, tessellated veil draws inspiration from early innovations of the Industrial Revolution. The perforated pattern echoes the punched cards once used in textile looms, an early form of programmable technology. These same patterns influenced British computing pioneers like Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace. Today, they underpin the digital foundations of Britain’s globally renowned film and gaming sectors, linking history and future through a language of pattern, precision, and progress. Accessibility for all The long gentle ramps ensure that all visitors are taken seamlessly along the same route through the pavilion, pausing to enjoy the immersive Come Build the Future experience, before offering the perfect vantage point for the breathtaking water and laser show at the Terrace Bar. The sequence of interconnected spaces has been designed not only to accommodate high visitor volumes but also to ensure accessibility, comfort, and safety for all with inclusive features such as tactile wayfinding and Braille signage have been integrated throughout. Unified by a distinctive and contemporary hybrid of British and Japanese design language, the interior of the pavilion, designed by WOO in collaboration with Stuart Forbes Associates, includes the main immersive experience, a gift shop, tea rooms, a terrace bar and meeting and conference rooms. terrace bar, and flexible meeting and conference areas. Sustainable and demountable Sustainability is central to the pavilion’s design. Based on a modular 10m x 10m grid, the structure is fully demountable and intended for reuse after the Expo. ES Global employed its innovative Global Modular System and lightweight foundation approach, ensuring minimal environmental impact while supporting a circular economy. Interior finishes, such as carpeting, will be donated to the local community for reuse. All trees and plants will be carefully uplifted and replanted in the gardens of the British Embassy in Tokyo, ensuring their continued growth and preservation.
