University of Queensland Soundshell

The UQ Sound Shell is a vaulted diagrid timber pavilion that acts as a pivotal element within the recently revitalised Lake and Amphitheatre at the University of Queensland St Lucia precinct. The Sound Shell responds to its sensitive and historically important site through simplicity of form and use of considered details and finishes. It enriches the on-campus experience and provides a new multi modal performance venue accommodating both small to large-scale events. Versatile in its design, the timber diagrid structure offers a shaded, functional space outside of performance times. Climate and acoustic analysis were integrated to deliver optimal performance quality while maintaining weather protection and lakeside views. Performers can hear themselves and others clearly, a key challenge to overcome for outdoor performances. Sited at the focal point of the Lake Precinct’s Amphitheatre, the Sound Shell compliments the existing landscape through thoughtfully considered form, materiality and detailing. Formerly disconnected from the lake by perimeter planting, the proposed ground plain renegotiates the Lake’s landscaped threshold for enhanced visual connection and occupation of the lakeside, without compromising existing view lines or the ecological conditions of the lakebed. Weather protection is achieved by the Sound Shell’s curved, timber diagrid structure in a low impact and context sensitive way to align with UQ’s Indigenous Design Framework. The material palette is durable, functional and enduring. A copper shingle roof lends itself to the surrounding natural palette alongside the GL21 spotted gum Glulam timber structure, which will gracefully weather to a soft grey. Material selection was key to achieving life cycle and client programmatic targets with prefabricated, mass-engineered timber allowing for rapid assembly and integration with the concurrent Amphitheatre restoration work. Outside of performance times, accessible and welcoming integration with existing campus infrastructure encourages public and campus engagement with the Sound Shell’s shaded and multi-modal space. Key operational features include a generous 12 x 6 metre stage, a clear height of 6 metres and sufficient hard and soft infrastructure to enable a flexibility of modes and accommodate both intimate and large-scale performances. To ensure optimal performance quality, the Sound Shell’s design integrates specialised climate and acoustic engineer analysis – every element has a purpose. It balances weather protection with open views of the lakeside while enabling performers to hear the performance clearly, addressing the usual challenges of outdoor performances. Computational design methods assisted in the efficient optimisation of the diagrid’s curvature profile alongside the articulate brass soffits, which were specifically crafted for ensuring the sound is reflected sufficiently to mitigate the single focal point of a cylindrical geometry of the vaulted roof. As a companion piece to the UQ Advanced Engineering Building, the Sound Shell reinforces UQ’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and enhancement of the campus experience. Its use of purposeful and crafted details, from exposed timber joints to articulated soffits, create a timeless and memorable structure that combines functionality, aesthetics, and sustainability, ensuring its value across future generations.
