WSO2 Office

How do you get employees back to the physical office? What does a post-pandemic workplace look like? How does architecture facilitate interaction, reflection and creativity? How could a sense of community be cultivated and teamwork fostered in an ever-evolving work landscape? These are questions that the designers wrestled with as they envisioned and crafted the new WSO2 Office Tower in Colombo, Sri Lanka, striving to merge work and play into a cohesive environment where memories were forged, and the narrative of WSO2 celebrated. Inspired by a Tech Treehouse, the designers sought to weave memories and magic into work life through a variety of experiences and spaces, that evoke a sense of place, celebrate WSO2 culture and provide opportunities for the imagination to thrive. Words of Arthur Schlesinger, aptly captured their aspirations: “Science and technology revolutionize our lives, but memory, tradition and myth frame our response.” The design philosophy transcended mere functionality, aiming to create spaces that inspired and elevated the human experience. From the ground up, spaces were conceived to evoke a sense of wonder and creativity, weaving together elements of comfort, innovation, and sustainability. At the heart of the design lay the concept of the living room office – spaces seamlessly blending the comforts of home with the functionality of a corporate setting. Warm, inviting reception areas greeted employees and visitors alike, setting the stage for collaboration and interaction. Dynamic meeting spaces, bathed in natural light, served as hubs for creativity and brainstorming, while sky pod meeting spaces floated above the floor, offering unique perspectives and fostering innovation. Ground floor public and food & beverage spaces were integrated to create a vibrant plaza for interactions, not only among employees but also with the broader community. An amphitheater-style teak seating hosted TEDx talks and other events, providing a platform for sharing ideas and sparking inspiration, or simply wooden steps to sit on and reflect in quiet meditation. Each floor of the tower bore its own identity, reflecting the rich culture and values of WSO2. Through meticulous attention to detail, spaces were crafted to not only meet the functional needs of its occupants but also serve as a testament to the company's ethos. Overcoming a dark time in Sri Lanka’s history, with economic downturn and severe shortages of construction materials, the project team remained steadfast in their commitment to innovation and excellence. None of this would have been possible without their collaboration and hard work. It was more than just a building – it was a testament to the power of design to inspire, connect, and transform lives.
