A campus where architecture behaves like infrastructure—then suddenly gives you a soft, brain-shaped library as a reward.
Public research university in Berlin, Germany.
Featured in Foster + Partners's definitive monograph, Norman Foster: A Life in Architecture.
Visitor Guide
Find the Philological Library (‘The Berlin Brain’) and walk its perimeter twice: first for the form, second for how entries and circulation tame it.
Outside the Philological Library, shooting low and slightly off-axis to exaggerate the ‘brain’ bulge; overcast afternoons are ideal (Berlin glare is unforgiving).
Campus is publicly accessible. Specific interiors (libraries) may have controlled entry depending on the day and security rules; treat interiors as a bonus, not a guarantee.
The Foster-era intervention is less about iconic shape than about retrofitting a messy campus system—wayfinding, circulation, and climatic control disguised as design.

Design & Structure
A hybrid of retrofit and new-build thinking: complex geometry for the library envelope paired with pragmatic campus logistics. The design reads like a continuous surface but behaves like a carefully segmented system for buildability and maintenance.
A light-colored, high-performance envelope paired with controlled glazing—materials chosen to manage diffuse daylight and thermal comfort for long study hours.
The notable feat is reconciling a bulbous envelope with clean interior spans and services—structure and MEP have to ‘follow’ the geometry without looking apologetic.
