A building that moves, shifts, and grows—the world’s largest kinetic art project in the heart of Manhattan.
Park in Bonn, Germany.
Featured in Diller Scofidio + Renfro's definitive monograph, DS+R: Architecture, Not Architecture.
Visitor Guide
Check the schedule to see if the shell is 'deployed' or 'nested'; the space changes entirely from a public plaza to an indoor theater.
The High Line at 30th Street, looking north, for a full-scale view of the ETFE bubbles and the massive bogie wheels.
Galleries and performances require tickets. The lobby (Cedric’s at The Shed) and the plaza are free to enter.
The design is a direct nod to the rail yard's history, using the same gantry crane technology that once moved freight across the West Side.

Design & Structure
Developed using BIM and custom kinetic engineering by Thornton Tomasetti to manage the 8-million-pound moving structure.
Translucent ETFE cushions; exposed steel diagrid; forged steel bogie wheels.
The movable shell is a rigid diagrid that transfers loads to six massive wheel assemblies, allowing it to move while maintaining structural stability.
