Visitor Guide

Visitor Tip

Visit at sunset when the titanium panels shift from silver to gold. Walk the full riverside loop — Gehry designed the building to unfold differently from every angle. There is no single "front."

Best Photo Spot

La Salve Bridge for the classic angle. The spider sculpture "Maman" for human scale. From across the river at dusk for the reflection shot.

Access & Hours

Open Tue–Sun 10am–8pm. Book online to skip the queue. Free entry on the first Tuesday of each month.

Insider Note

This was one of the first buildings designed with CATIA — aerospace software originally built for Dassault fighter jets. The titanium was sourced at half-price because of a Russian stockpile dump. Each panel is unique.

Design & Structure

FreeformDouble-CurvedParametric Surface
Computational Process

Gehry sketched loose curves, then his team at Gehry Technologies used CATIA (Dassault Systèmes) to rationalize the freeform surfaces into buildable panels. Each of the 33,000 titanium shingles was individually mapped. This project pioneered the use of aerospace CAD/CAM in architecture.

Materiality

Titanium cladding (0.38mm thick — thinner than a credit card), limestone, and glass curtain walls. The titanium was chosen over steel for its self-cleaning properties and the way it catches light. The limestone base connects the building to the Bilbao sandstone tradition.

Structural Innovation

Steel skeleton with over 33,000 unique connection points. The curves are structurally redundant — the building could lose significant members and remain standing.
