Visitor Guide

Visitor Tip

The exterior is the experience — walk the full perimeter to see the exposed services from different angles. The lobby (Underwriting Room) is occasionally open during Open House London.

Best Photo Spot

Lime Street for the full frontal shot of the service towers. From Leadenhall Market looking up through the Victorian ironwork with Lloyd's steel behind — the architectural time-travel is stunning.

Access & Hours

Not open to the public (working insurance market). Open House London sometimes offers tours — highly recommended. The exterior is always accessible.

Insider Note

Everything functional is on the outside: stairs, toilets, lifts, ducts, pipes. This freed the interior for a 60-meter-high atrium. The services can be replaced without disturbing the office floors — the building was designed to last 200 years.

Time Needed

20 minutes (exterior)

Design & Structure

ExoskeletonSpace Frame
Computational Process

Rogers pushed the Pompidou concept further — all services externalized, all structure exposed. The modular service pods were designed for crane replacement, extending the building's useful life indefinitely. The concept treats a building as a machine with replaceable parts.

Materiality

Stainless steel cladding, exposed concrete, glass barrel-vault roof over the atrium. The stainless steel is polished to a mirror finish — the building reflects the city around it. The concrete was left raw (béton brut) as an honest expression of structure.
