A crystalline stack of programs wrapped in a faceted net—Koolhaas makes information feel like urban infrastructure.
Main branch library in downtown Seattle.

Visitor Guide
Take the ‘Books Spiral’ all the way—don’t use the elevator if you can help it. The building’s intelligence is in continuous section.
From the west (5th Ave), late afternoon for the diamond façade to catch low sun; inside, shoot the red Level 4 escalators mid-day for color punch.
Free. Hours vary; some floors may close earlier. Tours and events are often available at no cost.
The structure and skin are essentially one system: that diamond lattice isn’t just pattern—it’s a seismic and architectural strategy.

Design & Structure
Designed through diagramming and program ‘plates’ stacked and shifted, then rationalized into a continuous enclosure. Complex geometry required 3D coordination between steel, glazing, and interior routing.
Steel diagrid and glass: transparency and structural expression collapse into one language; interiors use bold color as wayfinding infrastructure.
The diagrid provides stiffness and redistributes seismic/wind forces while allowing large column-free interior zones and dramatic cantilevers.
