Jewel Changi Airport
Don't Miss

An airport that ate a rainforest and decided to perform a waterfall opera every night.

Mixed-use development at Changi Airport.

Featured in Moshe Safdie's definitive monograph, Moshe Safdie: Architecture of Memory.

Visitor Guide

Visitor Tip

Time it: see the Rain Vortex in daylight for the pure spatial reading, then come back for the light-and-music show. Also—go upstairs; the vertical experience is the point.

Best Photo Spot

Level 2/3 perimeter railings facing the HSBC Rain Vortex, 10:00–11:30 for clean daylight; then the same spot during the evening Light & Music Showcase (arrive 20 minutes early for a clear railing position).

Access & Hours

Yes—Jewel is publicly accessible. Rain Vortex and Forest Valley are free; Canopy Park and some attractions are ticketed. Rain Vortex operates daily with set waterfall hours and scheduled evening shows.

Insider Note

This is Moshe Safdie scaling up the ‘public interior’ into climate-controlled urbanism: a mall, a park, and a landmark dome merged into one managed atmosphere.

Time Needed

1.5–3 hours

Design & Structure

DiagridShell Structure
Computational Process

Large-span dome and interior landscape engineered as a single ecosystem: structural grid coordination, environmental control, and visitor-flow choreography (vertical circulation as spectacle).

Materiality

Steel-and-glass enclosure + dense interior planting and water infrastructure—materials matter because they make a believable ‘indoors outdoors’ without turning into a greenhouse cliché.

Structural Innovation

A long-span roof enclosing massive voids plus the integrated water feature—structure and MEP are inseparable from the visitor experience.
