Visitor Guide
Climb the 'Hyakudanen' (100-step garden) to the top; the view of the square flower beds against the ocean is Ando's purest architectural statement.
From the top of the 100-step garden in the early morning, looking down at the grid of flower beds and the Westin Hotel's curved profile.
The grounds and 100-step garden are free to the public; certain areas of the Westin Hotel and conference center are private.
The complex was originally designed as a park, but Ando redesigned it to include a memorial and conference center after the 1995 earthquake.

Design & Structure
Ando utilized a strict grid that is recursively broken by circular and curved elements, creating a 'play' of light and shadow.
Ando’s signature silky-smooth exposed concrete, which requires meticulously finished wooden formwork to achieve its finish.
The complex is built into a hillside, utilizing massive concrete retaining walls and terraced structures to stabilize the formerly stripped land.
