Visitor Guide

Visitor Tip

If it’s windy (it often is), start on the sheltered side and work your way toward the ocean-facing edges; the building’s best moments are the low, compressed approaches before it opens out.

Best Photo Spot

From the terrace edge looking back across the roofline toward the city, shoot in late afternoon when the white surfaces pick up warm tones; after rain, wait for the roof to dry unevenly for dramatic tonal variation.

Access & Hours

Entry is ticketed. Typical high season hours are around 10:00–19:00; in February 2026 it lists 10:00–19:00 on open days. Individual tickets are about €15 adult / €13 reduced / €11 child (6–12), with combo tickets available with the Biarritz Aquarium. Annual closure windows apply—check the official schedule before you trek out here.

Insider Note

Steven Holl’s trick here is not the curve—it’s the way the building stays low enough to feel like landscape, while still hiding a surprisingly dense interior program.

Design & Structure

Shell StructureDouble-CurvedFolding
Computational Process

Landscape-first form-making: model a continuous roof/ground condition, then carve and light it from below. The geometry is less ‘parametric signature’ and more disciplined surface continuity—digital surface modeling + structural rationalization to keep the shell buildable.

Materiality

Light-toned concrete and smooth exterior finishes that read as a single continuous surface; glazing is deployed as cuts rather than walls so the roof remains the protagonist.

Structural Innovation

The project’s drama is a long-span shell-like roof condition that behaves as both architecture and topography—load paths are legible if you look for thickened edges and controlled openings.
