Daeyang Gallery and House

A private house that thinks it’s chamber music—three copper pavilions playing above a hidden gallery.

Building in Seoul, South Korea.

Visitor Guide

Visitor Tip

Treat it like a rare bird: don’t assume access. Your best experience is to move slowly around the perimeter viewpoints and watch how the copper rainscreen and water plane manipulate light.

Best Photo Spot

From the public street edge in Seongbuk-dong (Seongbuk-gu) where you can see the copper pavilion roofs over the reflecting pool; shoot late afternoon for copper warmth and skylight glow.

Access & Hours

Primarily a private gallery/house, not a standard public museum with daily hours. Access is typically by special arrangement/events; if you’re in Seoul during Open House-style programs, check listings for timed reservations.

Insider Note

The roof plan geometry is traced from a 1967 music-score sketch (‘Symphony of Modules’)—not metaphorically inspired, but literally used as a generative diagram.

Time Needed

20–40 minutes (exterior study); 60–90 minutes if you get interior access

Design & Structure

Folding
Computational Process

Diagram-driven composition: a musical score sketch becomes roof geometry; three pavilions are separated by water and stitched by a continuous gallery below. Light is treated as structure—skylights cut through roofs and even through the reflecting pool above to bring daylight down.

Materiality

Patinated copper rainscreen gives the exterior a slow-changing skin; stained wood interiors deepen shadow and color; water operates as both reflector and light modulator.

Structural Innovation

The floating-pavilion effect depends on disciplined spanning and waterproofing: roofs, skylight cuts, and the reflecting pool must align structurally and environmentally so the ‘music’ doesn’t leak.
