Ando takes a history museum and turns it into a sequence of cinematic cuts—light, concrete, and a stubbornly calm spiral.
Museum in Matsuyama, Japan.

Visitor Guide
Start at the street and commit to the ramps: the building is a slow reveal, not a single ‘wow’ moment.
From the small plaza/approach, mid-morning for crisp shadows in the concrete joints; inside, late afternoon for soft grazing light on the walls.
Hours vary seasonally. If you’re short on time, you can still enjoy the exterior and the street-level spatial choreography for free.
Look for Ando’s obsessive formwork logic: tie holes, joint alignment, and edge conditions are the real ornament—more precise than most ‘minimalism’ you’ve seen.

Design & Structure
Designed as a promenade architecture: section-driven planning, ramps, and controlled apertures. Digital coordination supports the geometry, but the ‘process’ is Ando’s analog discipline—sequence, proportion, and light control.
Fair-faced reinforced concrete with glass and steel accents: the concrete is the atmosphere—reflecting light, sharpening edges, and making silence feel architectural.
The structure is straightforward RC, but engineered for long, clean spans and tight tolerances so the concrete reads as a continuous carved volume.
