A building that blinks at you—Jean Nouvel turned the facade into a camera, a veil, and a machine for making Paris feel suddenly foreign (in the best way).
French cultural institute dedicated to the Arab world.

Visitor Guide
Skip the museum queue if you’re here for architecture: go straight for the rooftop terrace first (light is better and it’s the real payoff), then come back down for the south facade details at eye level.
Stand on Quai Saint-Bernard (river walk) directly opposite the south facade, about 30–60 minutes before sunset for the best glare-controlled shots of the mechanical ‘mashrabiya’ wall.
Yes—public building. Museum/exhibitions have ticketed entry; the rooftop terrace is the classic free move (go early if you want it quiet). Typical museum hours are daytime (closed Mondays); weekend closing later than weekdays.
Those ‘mashrabiya’ apertures were conceived as light-regulating diaphragms—high-tech optics masquerading as ornament—an early, very literal example of a responsive facade before ‘smart skin’ became a buzzword.

Design & Structure
Designed as a climatic instrument: a grid of camera-like apertures mediates sun and glare, translating a traditional mashrabiya into a mechanically-controlled screen. The architectural idea is essentially computational—repeatable units with variable states—whether or not you call it ‘parametric.’
Glass and metal dominate: the south facade’s metallic diaphragm field matters because it’s not just cladding—it’s an environmental filter. Inside, the modernist palette keeps your attention on light modulation and views over the Seine.
The structural bravado isn’t a wild form—it’s the building-as-device: a large-scale operable facade system integrated into a rigid frame, making performance (light control) the visible architectural event.
