A masterclass in how to double a museum without shouting—Piano’s ‘light scoops’ turn the roof into a daylight engine.

Visitor Guide
Time your visit so you hit the galleries when the scoops are doing their job (late morning to early afternoon): you’ll feel the light before you notice the architecture.
Woodruff Arts Center campus edge on Peachtree St NE, framing the Piano buildings against the older complex; shoot mid-morning for clean façade detail and readable roof forms.
Museum open Tue–Sat 10:00–17:00, Sun 12:00–17:00 (closed Mondays). General admission is typically ticketed; published general admission is around $23.50 (special exhibitions may affect pricing).
Those roof ‘scoops’ aren’t decoration—they’re a repeatable optical/thermal device (about a thousand) to pull in north light and diffuse it deep into the galleries.

Design & Structure
Designed around daylight control: an array of repeated roof elements calibrated to capture and filter light. The expansion strategy is compositional and environmental—multiplying a performative unit rather than inventing a single heroic gesture.
White aluminum cladding aligns with the existing white campus palette while keeping surfaces bright and heat-manageable in Atlanta sun; glass is used tactically to connect volumes without bleaching the galleries.
The scoop system is an environmental structure: roof geometry + framing + skylight assemblies act together to distribute light evenly while controlling heat gain.
