Le Corbusier: A Travelling Exhibition

Singapore

The travelling exhibition revolves around the built and unbuilt works of the icon of modernist architecture, Le Corbusier. As a tradition, each intern that comes through our office is tasked to build a model of a built or unbuilt project designed by Le Corbusier. Over the years, interns past and present, have added to the private collection. The travelling exhibition aims to share our private collection of Le Corbusier models with students from different universities worldwide. Due to the mobile nature of the exhibition and the need to bring the exhibits to multiple venues worldwide, customised pedestals were designed for ease of assembly and transportation. To address the challenges of multiple usage and frequent moving, eco-friendly materials were utilized – honeycomb boards that are lightweight, robust, and collapsible, allowing them to be flat-packed to save transport costs. Eliminating the need for glue or screws, the pedestals consist of two main parts and locking components, allowing for ease of assembly, disassembly, and transportation. Addressing logistical challenges, the pedestals can be flat-packed into wooden crates, allowing them to be shipped by truck, air or sea, providing hosts with different transport options to suit their needs. The modular nature of the pedestals allows for versatility in configuration to fit the unique spatial requirements of different venues worldwide. The exhibition adopts a different curatorial theme at each venue. The pedestals allow the models to be displayed flexibly, either by chronology, typology or geography. Since its first exhibition in Singapore in 2021, the collection has travelled to universities in Southeast Asia and Europe. Taking education out of the classroom, the exhibition provides a unique learning experience where students can enjoy physical models in an increasingly digital world. The collection of Le Corbusier's works forms priceless lessons for students and architects alike—today and in the future.
