This project is a three-bedroom condo unit located within a mixed-use development designed for a young family of four. The family comprises two creative professionals and their two preschool-aged children. The objective was to create a space that would foster closer family ties while providing sufficient space for individual growth. The project was initiated during the COVID-19 pandemic when lockdowns and quarantines were in place, and the need for functional living spaces became more apparent than ever before. The interior design of the unit was developed based on five key ideas aimed at promoting happiness and well-being while staying at home. These included creating coexisting and balanced spaces to alleviate the burden of housework on women, incorporating spatial solutions for a home office, incorporating greenery to reduce stress, providing simple ways to create personal space, and providing multiple areas for children's learning at home. To address the issue of feeling cooped up at home, the original layout of the unit was altered to provide more open spaces for communal use. A light and calming color scheme was employed throughout the unit, creating a soothing ambiance, while the use of bold pops of color on the ceiling demarcated transition paths through the apartment, adding a playful touch. The unit was designed to be family-friendly, with numerous features catering to the needs of both parents and children. For instance, the raised platform not only served to divide the space but also reduced the height gap between child and parent. Additionally, see-through walls and strategically placed furniture allowed parents to keep an eye on their children for added peace of mind. At the same time, quiet spaces were incorporated for the adults to take a little break, and for children to develop independently. The bedrooms were kept minimal and calming, while a coffee nook was carved out at the back of the unit, providing a quick escape from the hustle and bustle of family life. Cozy alcoves were also provided for children to play independently, promoting their development. Overall, this project serves as an excellent example of how the principles of functional and effective design can be applied to promote the well-being and happiness of families in times of crisis.
