Rashid & Latifa School is a purpose-built educational campus in Dubai, commissioned by the founding Emirati family to serve as an interim solution while their larger school masterplan was under development. The brief was urgent and complex, deliver a fully functioning school in just seven months that honors cultural expectations with a separate boys and girls wing while ensuring a cohesive, unified institutional identity. Though conceived as a temporary measure, the building was designed with permanence in mind. Its modular construction, flexible layout, and strategic site placement make it capable of being reassembled or expanded as an extension to the future campus. The interiors of Rashid & Latifa School were shaped by a deep understanding of how spatial experience can support the developmental and emotional needs of young learners. Guided by six foundational learning principles, learning from experts, collaboration, independent discovery, hands-on exploration, hybrid models, and seamless spatial flow, the interior design breaks away from rigid classroom formats to offer layered, learner-centered environments. Each classroom is zoned for focus, interaction, and quiet retreat, with flexible layouts that adapt to different teaching modes throughout the day. Breakout rooms between every two classrooms act as hybrid zones: part reflection space, part collaboration hub, always available for learners to take ownership of their environment. Materiality plays a critical role in shaping an environment where learners feel both at ease and engaged. Soft greens, muted clays, and pale taupes evoke the desert palette, while child-scaled furniture and tactile, mindful furniture choices to reduce cognitive overload and support sensory regulation. The visual language of Islamic geometry is embedded subtly into joinery, textiles, and wall details, creating a culturally resonant environment without overwhelming visual noise. Majlis-style seating and clearly articulated prayer rooms elevate informal and spiritual spaces to the same design standard as classrooms, reinforcing the idea that all environments, learning, gathering, reflecting, deserve equal respect. What sets this school apart is the blurring of boundaries between indoors and outdoors. Courtyards become extensions of the classroom, layered in such a way that light, shadow, and movement continue seamlessly across thresholds. The result is a school where every corner can be used, every space is intentional, and no part of the day feels confined. These interiors don’t follow trends, they follow needs, gently shaping learners’ routines, relationships, and sense of independence from the ground up.
