The Cantilever House

The Cantilever House The Cantilever House explores the intersection of public and private spaces spanning into its surrounding context while engaging the natural elements of water, greens and light. It is located in a corner plot at the end of the street , on an elevated level that faces an adjacent park. It's building forms are expressed in bold clarity through the expression of extruded bedrooms and a cantilevered pool, thrusting outward from the main structure and emphasizing the house's silhouette from all angles. The architecture was conceived to create a house that engaged all sides of the corner plot and create spaces that had views towards greenery. Large windows of the boxes frame views into the canopy of trees on site to create natural screens of leaves. This gesture offers privacy whilst creates a sense of being immersed in nature, as if the bedrooms are suspended among the treetops. The interior of the house continues with a similar sense of clarity, with public spaces for entertainment gracing the lower levels of the house. Sitting at the heart of the house, the spiral staircase blends and connects the spaces together. The study of materiality with the contrast of the concrete pool against the warmth of the corten steel tiles and aluminium pivot screens are key features of the design. In addition, exposed structural elements, varying ceiling heights and double volume spaces are used to define zones in the house. The elevated pool at the rooftop serves as an unexpected design gesture, taking advantage of the views above. Set against the evening skies, the pool illuminates and glows, engaging all sides of the street as a bold statement. The house stands as a hilltop sanctuary, connecting the beauty of the natural greens and a clearly expressed form that draws a playful intersect of spaces.
